For more than 16 years the International Welcome Club has been offering the hand of friendship to people from anywhere – yes! Even Edinburgh!
Started as a Friday evening social gathering running from September through till the end of April, the club is an ideal way to key into a new city, a new culture and a new language. In the summer time the Friday activities are suspended in favour of away days visiting interesting places and keeping costs at a minimum. In other words we HAVE FUN WITH FRIENDS. Outings include trips to the island of Bute and the island of Arran, walks up hills and along canal banks and around lochs, guided tour of the Comic Invention Exhibition in the Hunterian Art Gallery and of the Rennie Mackintosh building Hill House in Helensburgh.
Our summer CEILIDHS in the CRYPT are a great introduction to Scottish music, dancing and socialising without alcohol. There is always a light supper and a top rank accordionist who ‘calls’ the dances so everyone can join in.
A weekly English Language Conversation Corner is a popular event attracting between 30 and 40 people each week. This is held in the Church’s Crypt Cafe area. Native English speakers are the Hosts at each table and their Guests are people who want to practise using their English.
Recently a delightful, low keyed International Young Families group has been meeting too.
In a helpful collaboration with Woodlands Community Garden, the Church’s kitchen garden is being tended by a group of volunteers and interested folk who have green fingers or aspire to grow green fingers. As with most of the International Club activities, the gardening club is free and open to anyone who wants to get involved.
