Lenten Appeal 2021

Every year during Lent, we appeal to the congregation to support three causes; an international, a national, and a local one. This year we will support the following charities and causes:

Hillhead High School Hardship Fund

Hillhead High School are our close neighbours who have used our sanctuary for their end of term assembly numerous times. We have also been engaged in the COSY café at the school for many years. The hardship fund helps pupils from deprived backgrounds to have an inclusive learning experience without disadvantages. Support most commonly includes the provision of uniforms or learning materials. The following video created by the school’s Virtual Ceilidh Band show great pictures from life at Hillhead High (of course before CoViD 19).

Church Action on Poverty (www.church-poverty.org.uk/)

Church Action on Poverty aims to make UK society more just and compassionate, not just now but for the long term. It is right and vital that society helps those who are in great need now, but that alone is not enough. Their projects get to the underlying causes. They campaign for change, amplify the voices of people who have experience of poverty, and work directly alongside communities.  Niall Cooper, Director of Church Action on Poverty, explains for us their visions and aims:

UNICEF Covid-19 Vaccine Appeal (www.unicef.org.uk/donate/coronavirus

UNICEF will deliver 2 billion Covid-19 vaccines for health workers and the most high-risk people on our planet. From buying and transporting supplies through to administering the vaccine, donations will ensure:

  • vaccines get to even the most remote places in the world
  • vaccines are safely stored using cold chain equipment
  • health workers are protected and trained to vaccinate their communities

Dan Walden, a UK-based UNICEF Emergency Specialist, explains the challenges they face during this pandemic. The second video shows how UNICEF helps with vaccine distribution.
